It was the end of your shift at the little cafe you worked at. You had gone out back to throw out the trash & check the traps. Your boss had laid out traps to try and capture whatever animal was getting into the garbage and making a total mess in the alley.
You heard hissing and the cage clanging around. You ran to where the cage was to see what had been caught. You and your boss had thought it was raccoons that were getting into the trash, so you were quite surprised to see a rather large dark gray cat inside it. He was hissing and spitting, making all kinds of noise inside the cage. He must not have been in there long, judging by all the fight he still had in him.
You squatted down and smiled at the cat.
"Well hey there big fella. So you're the one whose been making those big messes out here, huh? Calm down, it's ok, no one's gonna hurt you." You smiled, the cat hissed at you, his ears flat against his head, and crouched down in the cage.
"Aww, poor guy, you're scared. Tell you what, if you calm down, I can sneak you outta here, hmm? Wow, I've never seen a cat with violet eyes. They're gorgeous! You're such a pretty kitty." You cooed. Well, he will be after his bath, you thought.
"How would you like to come home with me? It's a much better offer than the pound."
"Hey, _____, what are you, oh hey, we caught the culprit! A cat!" Your boss said as he crouched down next to you.
"He's a big one ain't he?"
"Yea, poor guy's scared." You said, smiling sweetly at the caged animal, who was still crouched down in the cage, growling.
"Well, I better go call animal control to come and get him." Your boss said as he stood up, you quickly grabbed his hand.
"No! They'll probably just kill him! Let me take him home, please. Look, he has a collar on, that means he belongs to someone."
"Well if he belongs to someone, all the more reason to call."
"Please sir, look how scared he is, sending him to the shelter would only make it worse. Please!" You pleaded, giving him your best puppy dog eyes. Your boss sighed and you knew you'd won.
"Fine, just make sure you call the number on his tag and let his owner know he's safe." Your boss said, walking back into the cafe. You smiled brightly and looked back at the cat.
"Did you hear that, you get to go home with me! I'll be right back, let me get my stuff and we'll be on our way!" You then got up and quickly ran inside to get your stuff.
This girl sure was an odd one. I didn't understand why she would offer to take me in, but was grateful just the same. I had been in and out of the pound so many times, I really didn't want to go back and she seemed nice enough.
I wonder what her reaction would be when she saw the only information on my tag was my name. No owner, no contact number, would she send me to the pound then? Just like all the others had?
I hissed and growled when I felt the cage move.
"Don't worry, big guy, it's just me. Now look," she said as she placed my prison on top of the garbage can.
"I need to look at you collar, so I'm gonna open the cage to look, so please don't bite, scratch me or try to run away." She said as she unlatched the door.
She opened it just enough to put her hand in and kept the other hand on the door so I couldn't force my way through. I growled at her again, warning her not to come closer. She ignored me and her hand slowly got closer.
"It's ok, I not gonna hurt you. I just want to see if there's a number on your collar and your name."
I growled a little louder this time, but stopped when I felt her hand scratch behind my ears. It was a sensation I hadn't experienced since I was a kitten. It felt good, I pushed my head into her hand, wanting her to scratch more.
"Aww, that's a good boy, see, I'm not gonna hurt you. I just want to help." She said as her other hand made its way into my cage and I felt her grab the tag on my collar.
"Lutz, huh? That's quite the interesting name for a cat. I like it." She smiled.
"Hmm, but there's no number or owner's name. Were you abandoned?" She asked.
I let out a mew, to answer her question.
"Well, we can't have that, now can we? All right, Lutz, you're coming home with me. But first, I need to stop off at the pet store to get some goodies for you." She smiled, I pawed at her hand as she removed it, I didn't want her to stop scratching.
"Aww, aren't you just too cute. I'm sorry, I have to close the cage so we can get going. Don't worry, I promise that when we get to my house, there will be lots of scratching and love for ya." She smiled at me as she closed the door and locked it.
I hated car rides, nothing good ever came of one.
